Crown Him Lord of All

Today is Christ the King Sunday, the last Sunday of the Church year! It's a fairly new feast day, but there are a lot of fantastic and appropriate hymns. (My Christ the King playlist is about two hours long.) So here's "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name," by Edward Perronet (mostly, at least).

(The lyrics I use here are not actually how the hymn would be sung in any version, but I like both Coronation and Diadem, and different parts of the lyrics repeat in the two versions, so I just used the lyrics without any repetition.)

All hail the power of Jesus' name!
Let angels prostrate fall;
bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown him Lord of all.

"For you alone are the Holy One,
You alone are the Lord,
You alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ,
With the Holy Spirit
In the glory of God the Father."
-- Book of Common Prayer, The Holy Eucharist Rite II

Ye chosen seed of Israel's race,
ye ransomed from the fall,
hail him who saves you by his grace,
and crown him Lord of all.

"When we turned away and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God, and spoke to us through the prophets."
-- A Service of Word & Table II

"Lord Jesus Christ, Only Son of the Father,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
You take away the sin of the world.
Have mercy on us."
-- Book of Common Prayer, The Holy Eucharist Rite II

Sinners, whose love can ne'er forget
the wormwood and the gall,
go spread your trophies at his feet
and crown him Lord of all.

Wormwood and gall: bitterness, poison, tragedy, unfaithfulness.
We can never forget these things that were our chains, that perhaps still remain but no longer reign in us. In being born of God, God works in us, and sin loses its power over us as the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts.

Let every kindred, every tribe
on this terrestrial ball,
to him all majesty ascribe,
and crown him Lord of all.

"For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever."
- The Lord's Prayer

Crown him, ye martyrs of your God,
who from his altar call;
extol the Stem of Jesse's Rod,
and crown him Lord of all.

The end of one year is the beginning of the next:
"A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots."
-- Isaiah 11:1

O that with yonder sacred throng
we at his feet may fall!
We'll join the everlasting song,
and crown him Lord of all.

"Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to praise the glory of your name:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest!"
-- Book of Common Prayer, The Holy Eucharist Rite II

Crown him, crown him, crown him, and crown him Lord of all!
